Departing from Lisbon, we begin our private tour of Évora directly in the historic city center. Évora was conquered from the Moors by Geraldo “Without Fear” (Geraldo Sem Pavor) in 1165, growing into one of the most prosperous cities in the Kingdom during the Middle Ages, especially under the Avis Dynasty (1385–1580).
A highlight of the visit is a walk through Praça do Giraldo, the main square built between 1571 and 1573. Named in honor of Geraldo Geraldes, this iconic landmark serves as the vibrant heart of the city and a tribute to the legendary figure who shaped the history of Évora.
On this private tour of Évora, we visit the iconic Temple of Diana—also known as the Roman Temple of Évora—one of the best-preserved ancient monuments in Portugal. Dating back to the 1st and 2nd centuries AD, history tells us this majestic structure was originally constructed as a tribute to Emperor Augustus.
Standing proud at the highest point of the city, the Roman Temple is a defining feature of the region’s rich heritage. Together with the rest of the historic center, it was officially classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986, making it an absolute must-see attraction for history lovers.
In Évora, you cannot miss a visit to the famous Capela dos Ossos (Chapel of Bones). Built in the 17th century on the initiative of three Franciscan friars, the chapel was designed to convey a powerful reflection on the transience and fragility of human life. This message greets visitors right at the entrance with the famous inscription: “We bones that are here, wait for yours.”
Located in Praça 1º de Maio inside the renowned Church of Saint Francis (Igreja de São Francisco), the Chapel of Bones is considered the true ex-libris of the city and one of its most fascinating attractions, offering a unique glimpse into the Baroque era’s artistic obsession with mortality.
Please Note:
- The guide does not accompany guests inside the Chapel of Bones.
- Entrance tickets are not included in the tour price.
We visit the magnificent Cathedral of Évora (Sé Catedral de Évora), dedicated to Santa Maria. Founded in 1186 and consecrated in 1204, this grandiose monument is the largest medieval cathedral in Portugal and stands as an incomparable example of transitional Romanesque-Gothic architecture.
The original primitive temple built at the turn of the 13th century was eventually transformed into the impressive landmark seen today, largely shaped by two major architectural campaigns during the Late Middle Ages.
On this private tour, we offer the opportunity to visit a local winery in Évora—one of the most celebrated wine sub-regions of the Alentejo. With a rich winemaking history dating back to the late 19th century and a major revival in the late 1980s, Évora is known for its Mediterranean soils and sunny climate that produce some of the most prestigious wines in Portugal. If you are a wine lover, adding an Alentejo wine tasting experience to your tour is something you won’t want to miss.

This visit is optional and the price is not included in the tour price.
